WWE Extreme Rules 2013 Review

Got a late start today after being pre-occupied with all of this storm coverage. It is truly devastating. My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of the Mid-West who have been under the constant threat of tornadoes starting yesterday and are continuing to endure the brunt of Mother Nature’s aggression as I type.

On a lighter note, last night was WWE’s annual night of extreme. Extreme Rules 2013 originated from the rich wrestling city of St. Louis, MO. and promised to deliver several great matches and reveals. Some were even saying the event had potential to up-stage WrestleMania 29. For those of you who read my Extreme Predictions, I didn’t do too bad overall. In terms of picks, my night started on the right foot at the Pre-Show and continued match after match until the I Quit Match. I ended the night 6-2-1 as three of the last four contests had unexpected outcomes. That’s definitely a good thing as I think it increases interest moving forward.

Pre-Show

The Miz def. Cody Rhodes

*It’s clear The Miz has been on a roll since returning to TV, and I felt we would see that continue last night. Good match to warm the crowd up.

Extreme Rules

Chris Jericho def. Fandango

*It’s known deep in wrestling lure that it’s very difficult to defeat a great Superstar twice in a row, and we’ve seen that play out since ‘Mania. I thought this was a great match to start the pay-per-view and fans got to see Fandango get his comeuppance after weeks of cowardly antics…complete with the big debut on the Showcase of the Immortals. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that it wasn’t until last Monday’s sprained-ankle swerve during the Dance Off that Fandango really raised the ire of fans. Nice ending as Fandango went to the well once too many and jumped right into a Codebreaker.

Dean Ambrose def. Kofi Kingston {United States Title Match}

*The hits started coming as the championships began to be decided. There was of course a lot of intrigue heading into Extreme Rules with the possibility of The Shield gaining another level of dominance in WWE, and fans didn’t have to wait long. I definitely like it being a 1-on-1 match. It’s the way it’s suppose to be and of course adds credibility to Dean’s win. As a product of the indies, it’s been great seeing guys from that level make it and I can’t wait to see more. There is a plethora of talent on the Indy scene, and Dean Ambrose is proof of that. Congrats are in order and I hope he continues to do well. One obvious question born of this situation is where does Kofi Kingston go from here?

Sheamus def. Mark Henry (Strap Match)

*I am a firm supporter of the World’s Strongest Man and would liked to have seen him pick up the W last night, but I felt things were built for Sheamus to prevail in the end, and that’s why I went with the Celtic Warrior. The fancy lights on the ring post adds color to the match, but old school fans look for the brutality in these matches. How many different ways can one use the leather strap to inflict punishment on his opponent…outside of “whoopin someone like they stole somethin”, as Henry previously referenced. I think we saw some of that and a good effort was put on to make the match stand out from others of its kind.

Alberto Del Rio def. Jack Swagger (#1 Contender’s I Quit Match)

*I went with Swagger in this one, thinking there might be some underhanded tactics taken by the former World Champion and Zeb Coulter. I was right on the shady maneuvers as it came down to Zeb throwing in the towel on ADR and the referee thinking it was Ricardo Rodriquez. Not exactly what I was thinking, but trickery nonetheless. I was cool with that as it added another correct prediction, then things took a turn for the worse and my record was no longer unblemished. WWE implemented the instant replay rule last night, and the match restarted leading to ADR’s victory. I spoke about this a couple weeks ago when Naomi was able to influence a decision reversal without a replay. This is wrestling. A referee’s decision is final. I don’t mind if it’s done from time to time if the situation calls for it, but I don’t think it should be the norm.

The Shield (Rollins & Reigns) def. Team Hell No (Kane & D. Bryan) {WWE Tag Team Championship Tornado Match}

*This match was wild and fast-paced as expected and delivered on what’s been told over months now. The tag contingent of the Shield accomplished their ultimate goal in winning the tag titles. They did it in stylish fashion with a devastating tag team finisher, capping off the night and ensuring that the group left St. Louis as a whole with gold around their waists. That indy influence I talked about earlier was present here with Bryan and Rollins. This was one of the matches of the night for me and I’m looking forward to the mandatory rematch.

Randy Orton def. Big Show (Extreme Rules Match)

*With the meteoric rise that Randy Orton has been on and the event being in his hometown gave the third generation Superstar all the momentum he needed heading into Extreme Rules. Given the reason for this match to begin with and Big Show taking some of the blame for the Shield’s dominance, I saw Orton gaining a measure of revenge and vindication after the way things ended for them at ‘Mania. I liked this match for the most part and am interested in seeing what’s next for Orton. This string of wins has to lead somewhere.

John Cena (C) vs. Ryback {WWE Championhip Last Man Standing Match} (No-Contest)

*I definitely didn’t see this one coming after the way the story was told. Ryback picked his spots systematically and did everything he possibly could to make sure he had the clear advantage going into Sunday’s title match. Cena didn’t help matters for himself by allowing his opponent to select the stipulation. All that being said, I felt conditions were ripe for a Cena victory. What we saw was along those lines as the champ wasn’t dethroned…but there was a twist that preserved Ryback as a worthy contender with legit claims for a rematch. I understand the move. Ryback has a story to tell going back to the end of last year and will no doubt one day be champion. Every great eventual champ has their fair share of roadblocks…no matter what side of the tracks they stand on. Where do we go from here? Payback is on the horizon.

Brock Lesnar def. Triple H (Steel Cage Match)

*Again, another outcome that I didn’t see coming. Anybody worth their salt knows the Steel Cage (or some variant) is the be-all-end-all when it comes to intense rivalries, and given everything that’s happened between these two since the beginning, it seemed right for HHH to win the feud. Brock did a lot to HHH along with his friends and family, and up’d the ante a couple weeks ago with the “Workplace Invasion”. It was no question that the match would deliver, and the ending actually prompted talk that the conflict might not be over. I don’t see how it could as long as Paul Heyman is around, and the way things are looking as of press time it may not be.

Through and through the show was pretty solid if you’re looking at it intelligently. Tremendous efforts by the talents involved that created moments that I believe will be remembered over time. Fandango’s first big loss. The rise of the Shield. A compelling conflict for the WWE title taking the next step into a series, and a red hot feud that’s been viewed as an “invasion” takes an unexpected twist. Mark Henry said he’s going home…which is apparently something else that he do. I look forward to seeing him return. One of the most impressive feats would have to be bringing the show no matter what…even under a severe weather threat that stretched the entire length of Tornado Alley and as I said before, continues to put those people at risk at this hour. We will discuss the Raw aftermath on Tuesday as well as kick into overdrive for a big indy event going down this weekend in South Jersey (@OnPointWrestlin), and catching up on TNA for the sites that see that report. This will be an abbreviated version of the SmackDown report as we prepare for Extreme Rules tonight on pay-per-view. I felt the show as a whole did a good job piggy-backing off a raucous go-home edition of Raw this past Monday. The stage is set for the annual night of Extreme, and I for one am looking forward to several of the matches on tap.

Miz TV with Randy Orton and Big Show got out of control in a hurry as four other Extreme Rules participants crashed the show with words for their respective pay-per-view opponents. Miz gets the credit for stirring the pot and the end result was a 6-Man Tag main event signed by SmackDown Senior Adviser Teddy Long. On one side was Orton, Sheamus, and Alberto Del Rio with Jack Swagger, Big Show, and Mark Henry on the other.

Rollins & Reigns of The Shield defeated Jimmy & Jey Uso in a good tag team match. The Shield continued to build momentum as they set their sights on WWE gold for the first time ever. I liked the chemistry between these teams in the 6 Man tag we saw on Raw a couple weeks ago that saw Dean Ambroe pin Kofi Kingston and earn a U.S. title shot. That chemistry was put on display again this week on SmackDown as the Usos continued to show why they deserve a push. The Shield was good as always and that Spear by Roman Reigns is something special. If he hits that on Daniel Bryan at Extreme Rules, it could be over for Team Hell No. Good stuff by Kofi on the save and chasing the Shield away with the chair.

Tons of Funk defeated The Primetime Players in a return match from Raw…getting revenge for Darren Young’s cheap shot with the hair pick.

I enjoyed the match between Chris Jericho and Antonio Cesaro. The belief within WWE during Cesaro’s U.S. title reign was that he could work with anybody and have a good match, and the same holds true for Y2J. I have always said that about the first Undisputed Champion, and he proved again this week. Great counter out of the gut-wrench into the Walls of Jericho for the submission victory. Perhaps if Fandango was spending his time more wisely scouting his opponent rather than playing around with Summer Rae on the WWE App, his sneak attack would have gone off without a hitch. However, he still managed to leave Jericho with the taste of blood in his mouth.

The Miz defeated Damien Sandow via submission using the Figure Four, continuing the roll he’s been on since returning to TV.

I’m not a big fan of seeing the same ending to two different matches on one show, but I understand the Spear is Kaitlyn’s move. We still already saw a better one in the Shield’s match. The secret admirer strikes again with a bouquet of flowers and some kind of gloves.

The 6-Man tag main event was what you would expect to drive each individual situation home with less than 48 hours to go until Extreme Rules. A wild back and forth encounter that saw both sides get their shots in. Amid the confusion in the end after the match broke down, Randy Orton slithered in from behind and dropped Swagger with an RKO…winning the contest for his team.

First, word on a long-overdue but welcome step by WWE to address the issue of concussions in wrestling.

This past week, World Wrestling Entertainment contributed $1.2 million over three years to further research aimed at developing a treatment for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. CTE, which has been seen in athletes and wrestlers suffering repeated concussions, and is linked to depression and dementia. This fact and the liability for it has notably challenged by the class action lawsuit by 4,000 former NFL players against the league. CTE has been linked to depression and dementia.

The WWE says the gift is a continuation of the Talent Wellness Program it started in 2006, which now includes the same neurological baseline testing used in the NFL and such pro wrestling-specific mandates as a ban against bashing an opponent over the head with a metal chair.

Notable in the changes in addressing concussions in WWE is seen even this past weekend when Dolph Ziggler recently sustained a concussion after getting hit with an errant kick that was supposed to be in the chest and instead got hit on the chin. He was pulled from last night’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

WWE’s donationt will be used by researchers at Boston University’s Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy in a new investigation aimed at studying the effectiveness of potential treatments for CTE.
“
Nowinski suffered a concussion while wrestling and in the attitude of the time, kept right on going, in Nowinski said of his situation in USA Today: “…I lied about my symptoms for five weeks and kept going. … I had a headache and was nauseous every time I got my heart rate up, but I fought through it as best I could.”

In the same USA Today interview, Paul “HHH” Levesque stated pretty openly about the goal of pro wrestling: “The goal in what we do is first and foremost … protect your opponent. Without him you have nothing. … Our whole goal is to make something look as devastating as possible and as impactful as possible with as little impact as possible. It’s really the art of what we do. We really work on that with talent. If John Cena and I are in a story line together and I hit John Cena hard and he gets injured, and he’s out, it hurts me as much as it hurts him. He’s out; now my opponent that I’m in a story line with is gone and my storyline just ended.”

The research figures to benefit other sports, but Levesque noted that WWE often gets its wrestlers from other sports: “We recruit a lot of our talent from other contact sports, NFL, NHL, rugby and the Olympics. … It’s important for us as to where they’re coming from and what has happened to them prior to them getting to us because it’s … in essence what we’re getting as a talent.”

Now, in contrast, here is news on a fan campaign to help pro wrestler Michael Paris (aka TNA’s Zema Ion) with his medical expenses.

Paris was recently rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with appendicitis, after suffering from severa abdominal pains. It may well have been the most fortunate attack of appendicitis ever, as while examining his condition through CAT scans, doctors discovered a five centimeter tumor located on his colon.

As of this writing, it is unknown whether the tumor is cancerous, Paris will soon have to undergo another surgery to remove it. In the meantime, fans are trying to help pay his growing medical expenses. He does not have health insurance, so the costs for these surgeries and hospital will be expensive. Please help us to afford this effort and pitch in any way possible,

It’s notable that there’s been no word whatever from TNA on assisting Paris with his expenses.

Paris began as Shiima Xion with Pittsburgh’s International Wrestling Cartel, and became a mainstay with the promotion for several years winning the IWC Super Indy IX Tournament in 2010, was twice the IWC Super Indy Champion, twice the co-IWC Tag Team Championship with Jason Gory, and twice the IWC Heavyweight Champion.

Paris also has international experience, with Japan’s Dramatic Dream Team promotion, he won the 2006 Takechi Six Man Tag Scramble Cup with Kudo and Mikam. He’s also worked Mexico for the Desastre Total Ultraviolento (DTU) promotion in 2009, as well as appearances with AAA in 2009, as well with other Mexican independents through 2012.

He’s also appeared with other US independent promotions, including CZW, Far North Wrestling and New Era Pro Wrestling.

After 9 years, he was signed to a contract with TNA Wrestling in 2011, where he won the X Division championship last year

But now he needs the assistance of wrestling fans.

Maverick’s Comic Roundup : 5/17/13 – Batmania

Batmania returns…

Like millions of other, my first real introduction to the world of superheroes came in the form of daily reruns of the iconic Batman television that starred Adam West and Burt Ward. If I were to be honest, which I am since it’s my column and all, I’d say that television show remains my favorite incarnation of the caped crusader.

For me, and millions of other fans around the world the fact that there wasn’t any merchandise or DVD presence for this beloved series was frustrating. We watched while classic TV series after TV series received the nostalgic resurgence, while all Batman got were a few morsels, just enough to keep hope alive.

Then, out of the blue, last year at Comic Con we received the surprise news that thrilled Bat-Fans everywhere. Mattel would be releasing action figures based on the classic 1966 series!

Since that announcement we’ve learned that some sort of agreement has been reached allowing all sorts of Bat-goodies to be made for mass consumerism.

DC Comics will be publishing a digital first comic book series this summer based in the world of the show. DC plans on releasing a print version of the book as well. You can believe I’ll be buying both.

Funko will be releasing POP and bobble figures, we’ll also be getting Halloween costumes, T-Shirts, posters and much more, but so far the coolest product goes to Figures Toy Co. who will be producing Mego-esque figures based on the series.

For you out there who have no idea what a Mego figure is, first, I’m sorry for you.

Mego was a toy company in the 70′s that produced 8 inch action figures with cloth clothing, they had agreements to make DC, Marvel, Dukes of Hazzard and many, many more brands. They had a cool run of Batman figures based on the comics, and Figures will be reproducing those as well, however they will be doing a second set of figures based on the show.

They’ve already published some great photos of Egghead (Played by Vincent Price) and Caesar Romero’s Joker and they look fantastic. The company has big plans for the toy line as long as interest is there. I can’t wait to see more personally, there are a lot of great villains that should get the Mego treatment.

So Batmania is ready to strike again this summer, much of the merchandise is due to start coming out in June. For the first time in several years I’m excited to be out on the hunt for a collection. A collection that I’ve been waiting on my whole life.

The one announcement however, that hasn’t been made is when and if we’ll be getting a DVD/Blueray release of the series. There’s always this years Comic Con I suppose.
