The Ant Hill : Brian Dawkins Retires……..

The Ant Hill

An open letter to Mr. Jeff Lurie, Mr. Joe Banner and Coach Andy Reid…

By Anthony Jovinelli

Sirs: As you are most likely aware at this point, April 23, 2012 marks one of the sadder days for professional football fans and mostly those from Philadelphia as Brian Dawkins announces his retirement from the National Football League. This is not just a great player leaving but a great leader as well as an inspiration.

A three year starter at Free-Safety for Clemson University, Brian Dawkins was drafted in the second round of the 1996 draft by The Philadelphia Eagles. This Philadelphia Phan Phavorite played for The Eagles until his much chagrinned release in 2009. He signed with The Denver Broncos until his contract expired in 2011.

Brian Dawkins was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, selected to the NFL’s “2000s All-Decade team and a winner of the “Whizzer” White Man-of-the-year Award. He was also, not only a member of but a significant component of the Eagles 2004 NFC Championship team as well as being a part of the Philadelphia Eagles 75th Anniversary team. Not to mention, that in 2002, in a game versus the Houston Texans, he became the first NFL player to record a Sack, an Interception, a Forced Fumble and a Touchdown Reception in a single game.

Gentlemen: in 2009 Dawkins was selected to the Clemson University “Athletic Hall of Fame”. Upon his first year of eligibility, he no doubt will be Canton bound as a first year selection to the NFL Hall of Fame. What a travesty if BDawk is not selected as a retired Philadelphia Eagle. Many of us are torn asunder seeing Reggie White as a Green Bay Packer after his illustrious career and untimely passing. Please do this man and this city the justice of letting him enter those hallowed halls as a retired Eagle. THANK YOU.
