Mav’s Comic Round-Up

Mav’s Comic Round-Up

By Maverick

Howdy folks, it’s your friendly neighborhood Maverick here for another exciting adventure through the world of comics.

Next weekend (May 4-5) is going to be HUGE if you’re a geek like me. First, May 4 is National Star Wars Day, You know, May the Fourth Be With You, and all. So expect some fun Star Wars stuff going on. Also on May Fourth is the day fanboys have been waiting on for YEARS. The Avengers finally hits movie screens. This one looks amazing and is already breaking records. I can’t wait to see it. OH, STAY for the credits if you want to know where the inevitable sequel is headed. I already know, and all I can say is WOW.

Finally May fifth is Free Comic Book Day! FCBD is practically Christmas for comic fans. If you’re new to the whole Free Comic Book Day, it’s really cool. Comic Book Stores, all over the multiverse will have available special comic books, that are, you guessed it, absolutely free. Many stores make an event of it, offering sales, signings appearances and more. Speaking of which…

Come see me on Free Comic Book Day at the Comic Universe in Folsom Pa. I’ll be there from 12-3 making balloon art for the kids, checking out some free comics, and whatever shenanigans I can get myself into. For more, go to ComicUniverse.Net

Also, keep your eyes peeled, I’ll be doing my annual Free Comic Book Day Preview next week, highlighting some of the fun stuff going on for Free Comic Book Day.

I’ve been watching the Green Lantern toon, and you know, for a guy that’s supposed to be the toughest GL drill sergeant Kilowog sure gets knocked out… a lot.

This weeks DC Nation Teen Titans short had great homages to classic Titans comics, Dr. Who and even Scooby Doo. It was definitely one of the better shorts they’ve managed to put out. I still think some of the shorts could benefit from being a little longer, Especially the Titans and Super Best Friends forever.

Speaking of the shorts, why haven’t there been talks about Tiny Titans being made into shorts for DC Nation. They’d be PERFECT!

I’m a die hard DC Comics guy, but I’m really loving a lot of what Marvel is doing lately. Daredevil, Captain America and AVX have been lots of fun.

Pull List:

Captain America #10 (Marvel)
Cap gets his “mojo” back in time to help stop the riots in New York, but as is usual with this awesome new series, everything is not cut and dry. This was the end of the “Powerless” arc, but there are still many unanswered questions and plot threads still unanswered, and that’s OK by me, since I’m really enjoying this book.

Daredevil #11 (Marvel)
I love the current DD run, however this issue was part of another crossover, this time with Spiderman and Punisher, and I was a little lost being dropped into what essentially is the third part of the event. While the story did deal with some of what’s going on in DD, the main part of the story was about DD trying to convince Punisher’s new, um, sidekick(?) that Punny may not be the best role model. SInce I have no idea who this woman was, what happened previously in the story and care very little about the Punisher, this issue was a bit of a let down. I suppose I could track down the other two parts of the story, but it didn’t interest me enough to bother.

Marvel Universe: Ultimate Spiderman #1 (Marvel)
A new companion book to the animated series that airs on Disney XD. If you enjoy the series, you will love this book. This issues main story actually takes place the day before the first episode, and actually sets up some of the stuff that happens in the show. It’s a very faithful adaption of the series, complete with crazy narratives, and even a “Marvel Mashups” I think It’s always a good thing when the comic based on a series actually feels like the series.

AVX: VS. #1 (Marvel)
I love this idea. This is a mini series that ties into the AVX main series and highlights some of the bigger fights in the main book in kind of a “between the panels” type of thing. Issue one features Iron Man Vs. Magneto and The Thing Vs. Namor. The book is also filled with “AVX fun facts” which I mostly enjoyed, but I could see many comic book guys grumping about. The best thing about this comic is it tells you right up front, it’s all about the fights, not the stories, so if you skip it you don’t miss anything, if you read it, it will enhance the fun of the big time match ups.
