Maverick’s Comic Roundup 1/29/13
Howdy folks, welcome to the Comic Roundup. This column will by my weekly look at the world of comic books, sci-fi and superheroes. Thanks to Bay and the Totally Driven team for allowing me to return to TDTV to talk about the stuff I love and have been involved in for almost my whole life, namely comics, superheroes and sci-fi. Since this is my first column for Totally Driven in a while, I want to share my thoughts on a bunch of current hot topics from the world of comics.
Robert Kirkman is the creator of The Walking Dead comic book that inspired the hit series on A&E, however he’s also the creator of one of the best Superhero comics currently being published, Invincible. The series is closing in on it’s landmark 100th issue due out Wednesday (Jan 30) which for a non DC Marvel book is a pretty big deal.
The mad genius Kirkman stirred up some buzz this week by releasing a preview the centennial issue and to say it was shocking is an understatement. I’m not gonna spoil it, but I will say that I think and definitely hope that the teaser is a red herring. For those of you who HAVE to peek at it before Wednesday, check out the preview on BleedingCool.Com.
Young Justice and Green Lantern animated shows cancelled:
No surprise here really. While both shows were popular with grown up fanboys, the two comic based shows never really found an audience with Cartoon Networks core audience, children, nor with CN advertisers, who attempt to sell things to said children. Both shows will be cancelled after this season concludes in the spring, although I wouldn’t put it past CN to shelve the shows earlier. The DC Nation animation block however will go on, with the current shows being replaced with new shows “Beware The Batman” and “Teen Titans GO”. More on those later.
Justice League movie to feature fab five:
Word going around recently is that the Justice League team that will be featured in the upcoming movie will be DC Comics “big five” of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Flash. I like this idea, especially for a first movie. These are the most recognizable characters DC has and will be a great launching pad if done properly. Currently however the rumor is Warner Bros. is waiting to see how the Superman reboot, “Man of Steel” does at the box office this summer. Let’s hope it’s a better film than Superman Returns.
Casting craziness for Future Past:
LOTS of X-Men movie alum are signing on for the next X film, Days of Future Past. While I’m interested to see where they’re going with this, I wasn’t a huge fan of Singer’s last two X movies. I guess time will tell.
Next week, I’m taking a look at a rather odd story trend at Marvel comics, and what I think it means. In future weeks I’ll be covering Free comic book day, comic conventions, movie premieres and any big comic stories that come down the road.
On a personal note, I’m very excited to announce that this Tuesday (Jan. 29) I will be a part of “Superhero Family Night” at the Ridley Chick-Fil-A in Folsom PA. My not so mild mannered alter ego is usually there every week, however due to the Superhero theme for this special event, I’ll be donning the mask and hat to have some fun, and of course some chicken! Stop by and say howdy.
See you next week, same Mav time, same Mav channel…
